…once upon a time.
I know what it’s like to feel horrible at networking.
Hor-ri-ble.
In fact, during most of my years as an actress, I was a total wallflower.
I’m not exactly proud to admit that, collectively, I’ve probably spent hours of my life sitting in bathroom stalls instead of mingling at events. Hours of my life.
That’s why my acting career stalled at a certain point and just stayed there.
I did okay – I made some good money and shot some fun stuff. But I got nowhere near my full potential.

I did.

And I eventually figured out – while building my side business as a professional organizer – that success requires extending yourself to other people, marketing your skills and talents, and building relationships (a.k.a. “networking”). So I applied myself to the task of learning how to become a better networker.
I read a ton of material about how to network – most of it written, it seemed, by “natural” networkers who just encouraged me “to put on a smile and collect some business cards!” (Grrrr.)
However, baby step by baby step, I tested out theories and tactics and tools and finally found a few, simple, painless things that really work for me.
But here’s the biggest secret I discovered…
You don’t have to become a great networker. You just need to become a BETTER networker.
That is 100% true.
I’m still not great at networking. If you follow me around at an event you will NOT see “Ms. Smooth” in action. I’m not so smooth. But I am efficient and I am effective and I’ve discovered that’s all you need to be.
You and I both know how awkward initiating conversations can be BUT, we also know how POWERFUL connecting with even one person can be.
